  • African American women had a significant role in World War II (WWII). From wartime participation to working in defense industries, women were a vital part of the war. Specifically, The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was designed to place women in active military roles, such as serving on the forefront, helping control switchboard operators, and helping repair weapons. While some African American women were able to serve, much-experienced bias and some sort of segregation, such as being assigned to janitorial duties and/or serving in segregated units. Regardless of their post, the legacy of African American women during WWII carries on today. Thank you to all those brave and courageous African American women who served in WWII. #BlackExcellence #BlackHistoryMonth #welcomingatl #atlanta

Through his art history portraiture work, Mr. Wiley depicts urban Black men and women from the diaspora in regal, religious, heroic and sublime contexts, simultaneously combating the erasure of Black bodies in these historical contexts as well as offering an empowered visual of contemporary Black individuals. • Welcoming Atlanta would like to honor Bambadjan Bamba, an immigrant from the beautiful country of Ivory Coast. While Bamba has appeared on many television series, he is currently known for his role in the upcoming Marvel film “Black Panther.” When he was 10 years old, his family decided to flee Ivory Coast because of political persecution in his home country. Like many other black immigrants, Bamba arrived to this country two decades ago on a visa with his parents. It was not until his senior year of high school that Bamba realized that he was undocumented. After realizing his status, Bamba felt unmotivated because he did not qualify for financial aid or college scholarships; however, Bamba, which means “resilient” in Dioula (Mandingo), did not allow his adversity to limit his success. As a result of President Barack Obama’s executive order in 2012, Bamba was able to adjust his status and apply for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival). Since then, Bamba has used his status to climb the ladders of Hollywood. In addition to working as an actor, Bamba is now working with Define American, an organization that helps immigrants tell their story through a digital platform. Congratulations, Bambadjan Bamba! #BlackHistoryMonth #welcomingatl #atlanta
