  • Whenever my brother and I come home for the holidays we make our usual stop at our hometown liquor store. We're similar in many ways but alcohol preference is definitely not one of them haha. I love my gin and vodka; he's all about his bourbon. I Can't think of a better way to kick off Thanksgiving 2017 than cocktails and a warm fire in the fireplace. It's a great way to catch up and enjoy some family time! #holidays #thanksgiving #thanksgiving 2017 #family #Gin #alcohol #liquor #cocktails #family Time #gettogethers #brothertime #thebotanist #drygin #juniper #botany #islay #scotland #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Some days I feel like the only person who welcomes winter and its cold weather with open arms. One big reason is it's soup season! Today, I decided to make one of my favorites and specialties: seafood chowdah! It's a more time consuming and expensive recipe than most of my soups but sooo worth it on the rare occasion I make it. The first photo shows the final product in all its creamy, seafood goodness; the other photos show some of the steps along the way. The second photo is (most of) the ingredients: fresh caught cod, premium real crab and clams, potatoes, carrots, onion, garlic, fresh thyme, white wine and heavy cream. Next is half your cod in boiling water to create your fish stock as part of the chowder's base. Then carrots, onion, and garlic sautéing with the wine added and cooked down next. The last photo is the addition of the fish stock, wine, potatoes, and thyme to softly boil until the taters are soft. Then all that needs done is adding of the cream and seafood! Bring to a simmer/soft boil and stir frequently then serve! On occasion I'll add barley with less potato, too. It honestly tastes even better the next day after its chilled and thickened with the flavors all married. Some fresh baked crusty bread to dip is just right, too! #Food #kitchen #recipe #foodie #MadeFromScratch #Soup #seafood #chowder #seafood chowder #Cod #Clam #Crab #freshseafood #cream #veggies #fallcooking #cooking #homecooking #foodporn #Fall #autumn #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • I've been sick the last few days and spent a lot of time in bed. Thankfully, I've had my furry feline best friend to keep me company. I think Arya has enjoyed having someone to spend time with in the afternoons and her cuddles have been most appreciated. Don't know what I'd do without my little fur child

  • While going through some old photo folders on my computer the other day, I came across this one I took of myself around this time 7-8 years ago. My family's farm in west central Ohio has a small woods with some of the largest bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis) trees I've ever seen in it and this one made for a worthy subject to pose with. This was just as I was getting into botany and I was especially enamored with large, old trees at the start. The black and white treatment of the photo makes it look like it's over a century old and a distant ancestor of mine but that's just an emerging Buckeye botanist figuring out what he wants to do with himself and his life not all that long ago. A fun photo to reminisce on for me to be sure... #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #instanature #InstaLandcscape #instatree #botany #Tree #dendrology #bigtree #oldgrowth #ancienttree #forest #ecology #hickory #carya #juglandaceae #portrait #blackandwhite #Ohio #ohiotrees #ohiobotany #ohionature #winter #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • It had been a hot minute since my dad and I watched an Ohio State game at the 'Shoe together. Perfect Big Ten football weather and a resurgent Buckeyes squad made for a fun time! However, the sardines-in-a-can feeling of the stands and loud/drunk moronic know-it-alls behind us were solid reminders why I'll always think my couch has the best seats of all. Games were more fun when I was a student there many moons and beers ago haha. #football #ohiostate #buckeyes #OSU #ohiostadium #thehorseshoe #ohiostate Football #gameday #B1G #bigten #Fall #autumn #michiganstate #msuvsosu #columbus ohio #columbus #carmenohio #sports #scarletandgray #beers #football Weather #landscape #stadium #football Stadium #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Even as common as they are, I never tire of seeing the gorgeous "berries" or seed cones of the red cedar (Juniperus virginiana). It's a dioecious species with separate male and female trees, so don't be surprised if you find many a red cedar without its attractive fruit. It's also a genuine juniper rather than a cedar as its common name suggests but what's in a name anyway? The glaucous, waxy pale blue seed cones aren't just appealing to my eye but my tastebuds as well. I'm an avid fan of gin and gin's uniquely coniferous flavor comes from the aforementioned seed cones of junipers. Even better and quite appropriate is my gin of choice is 'The Botanist', an exceptionally high quality Scottish spirit. My ancestral homeland may be known for scotch but they sure distill a mean gin! #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #instaplant #instanature #instatree #botany #dendrology #Tree #cedar #juniper #redcedar #juniper us #conifer #seedcone #forest #EarlySuccessional #Gin #Ohio #ohionature #ohiotrees #ohioflora #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Life has been busy lately and field work is largely wrapped up so forgive my lack of posting the last week or two. I thought I'd break up the monotony with a shot at my primary botanical/nature library. I get a lot of messages and emails on what literature, references, keys etc. I use and figured this might be of some help and use for whomever is interested. It's a high-enough resolution photo that if you zoom in you can make out the specific titles for most all the books seen. • When the cold and dreary weather comes back into my life, I get to soup makin'! A classic I love is slow cooked split pea soup. It will be the perfect thing to have during the big Ohio State v Penn State game after simmering all morning and afternoon. Toss in split peas, ham hocks, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, parsley, salt and pepper with vegetable broth and water and you're set! It really thickens up and goes wonderfully with some crusty bread. Can't wait to dive into a bowl in 7-8 hours with a glass of fresh-from-the-orchard apple cider. If only you could experience how amazing the house smells all day, too. And of course let's go Buckeyes! #Food #kitchen #recipe #foodie #MadeFromScratch #Soup #splitpea #splitpea Soup #veggies #Ham #slowcooker #crockpot #fallcooking #cooking #homecooking #tailgate #foodporn #howtovideo #Fall #autumn #video #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • It's time to reveal the best life plant I had the pleasure of making acquaintances with during the 2017 botany season. It was an easy decision to have this wildflower be number one as it was one of my most exciting and meaningful of rare plant discoveries in my career thus far. The featherfoil (Hottonia inflata) has been extirpated and unseen in Ohio for over 30 years and thought long lost for our flora. It's a winter annual that is very fickle and finicky about blooming, which makes finding/tracking it even more difficult. Many have looked for it over the decades with no luck. As the fates would have it, I managed to discover a lovely population of it back in late May in a pond in extreme southern Ohio doing its thing and looking great! I can't recall the last time my heart about leaped out of my chest in such a manner as it did: I couldn't believe my eyes. It's such an odd, goofy plant that nothing else comes close to looking like and is rather rare across its range. The feather-like submerged leaves are topped with hollow inflated stems adorned with tiny and inconspicuous white flowers. The cherry on top was the presence of the state-endangered low spearwort (Ranunculus pusillus) occurring at the site as well! Days and discoveries like that are part of why I became a field botanist and do what I love and love what I do. It's definitely a plant few would find attractive but it's the most beautiful thing I saw this year! #nature #nature Gram #nature Lovers #nature Photography #ignature #PlantPhotography #PlantsOfInstagram #instaplant #instanature #botany #wildflower #hottonia #featherfoil #wetland #rareplant #aquaticplants #Pond #discovery #Ohio #ohionature #ohioflora #OhioWildflowers #ohiobotany #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • I hope people have enjoyed my top ten countdown to 2017's best life plants as it comes down to the final reveal. I love reminiscing on another great field season with the wildflowers that caused the most emotion and joy! For number two and my penultimate post we travel back to early June and my trip out to southern IL and southeastern MO with @beadlesbarrens. On top of a Missouri mountain lived a plant I'd day dreamed of seeing for years and Roger knew right where to see it. The federally threatened Mead's milkweed (Asclepias meadii) is a fascinating plant with its much larger than normal and lime green/yellow flowers that seem to glow in the sunlight. We found seven plants but only one in perfect flower and it made me giddy as could be. The surrounding scenery was hard to beat, too with phenomenal vista views across the rolling forested mountains from the milkweed's igneous glade home. This rarity is only known from few extant sites in five Midwestern states and an honor to finally lay eyes on. Be sure to check out all five photos, including the last one of the stunning view! #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #instaplant #instanature #wildflower #botany #milkweed #asclepias #meadsmilkweed #globallyrare #rareplant #igneousglade #barrens #lifeplant #missouri #missouri Botany #missouri Wildflowers #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • I've whittled down my top ten list of 2017's best life plants to the last three! This is where the fun really begins if you ask me. I don't think I've ever had an orchid not take at least one of these last three spots and this year is no different with my favorite UP orchid sighting from our 30 species day. It was a long awaited lifer I'd daydreamed of seeing for many years, too! The greater round-leaved orchid (Platanthera macrophylla) looks nearly identical to its close kin the lesser round-leaved orchid (P. orbiculata) at first glance in a photo but seeing it in person and it's instantly clear they're not the same thing at all. Platanthera macrophylla looks like it raided an NFL linebacker's locker and took ever last steroid it could find! This behemoth of an orchid is larger in every regard from its brethren, with nectar spurs twice as long (4+ cm) and basal leaves as large as dinner plates. Unlike the wide ranging lesser round-leaved species, the greater is restricted to the northern Great Lakes region and Northeastern US/Canada. We found a dozen or so plants in bloom in the wooded dunes of the Grand Sable Dunes, including one that was just a monster at nearly two feet tall and 50-60 flowers. It was definitely the highlight of my epic orchid day on the UP last July! It was a decidedly difficult plant to photograph in situ due its color scheme and lighting but I did my best. #nature #nature lovers #nature gram #nature Photography #ignature #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #instanature #instaorchid #wildflower #botany #orchid #orchid aceae #platanthera #dunes #coniferwoods #GrandSableDunes #UP #michigan #michigan botany #michigan Nature #michigan Orchids #ExploreMichigan #puremichigan #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • We're coming down the home stretch on my countdown of 2017's top ten life plants. The final four plants I'll share all had a big impact on my botanical year no matter their size, and believe me: number four on my list is about as small as it gets. This past late May I had the pleasure of checking a rare fern off my list list while working in the Hocking Hills. It's the tiniest, daintiest thing you ever saw, too! The triangle grape fern (Botrychium lanceolatum) is a state-threatened species in Ohio. It's a needle-in-a-haystack kind of situation to find and only known from a handful of extant locations, two which are in the Hocking Hills region. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the first plant and how minuscule it was: it makes my pencil look gargantuan. This little grape fern grows on rich, moist stream terraces in more mature woodlands and should hypothetically be more frequent since that habitat type isn't exactly rare but perhaps its impossibly small size keeps most from ever noticing it. It's an expert hider under the taller vegetation, especially stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). The second photo shows a mature and handsome specimen "in the hand" to show just how small it is. #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #plantid #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #instanature #instaplant #instafern #botany #Fern #grapefern #botrychium #Tiny #frond #woodland #hockinghills #rareplant #ecology #pteridophyte #Ohio #ohioferns #ohiobotany #ohioflora #ohionature #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Hitting the halfway point on my countdown of 2017's top ten life plants is lifer number 5 and one of Ohio's rarest of the rare. Getting an Ohio species to make this list grows more uncommon each year as I've seen more and more of our flora, so it's always extra special when one does make the cut. Featured here is the odd and usual glade spurge (Euphorbia purpurea). It's not only rare in Ohio (S1) but globally as well (G3) and only known to occur sparingly at about 50 sites in 8 mid-Atlantic states, with Ohio being an odd westernmost disjunct. Glade spurge grows at two spots at one site in south-central Ohio, both on rich-mesic limestone bluffs above a small dolomite-bottomed stream. The two dozen or so plants in total rarely flower but a few appeared to have tried this season, as evidenced by the orbicular bracts produced at the apex of the stem in the second photo. Despite being a spurge, deer browse is a present and real threat to this plant and it's no surprise our last remnants of it are in such an inaccessible situation. The photos may not be much to look, especially of vegetative-only material but for a botanist, at least this botanist its botanical royalty and a precious member to Ohio's flora. Long may it reign...or at least persist! #nature #nature gram #nativeflora #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #plantid #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #instaplant #instabotany #botany #wildflower #rarespecies #globallyrare #gladespurge #euphorbia #limestone #bluff #ecology #summer #Ohio #ohionature #ohiobotany #OhioWildflowers #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • When I put together my annual top ten best life plants list, I sometimes come to a point where I can't choose between two closely related species. So I say screw it and include them both! 2017's best life plant(s) number 6a and 6b are two long sought after orchids. Blunt-leaved orchid (Platanthera obtusata) featured first, and broad-lipped twayblade (Neottia convallarioides) shown second were both seen on the longest and most incredible single day of botanizing I've ever had. The eastern portion of Michigan's UP rewarded myself and my botanical cohorts with 30! species of orchids! I'll never beat that record and was especially pumped to come across these two lifers. There was a third lifer from that trip that will make this list later on! My orchid life list for North America is now at 81 species, with so many more to go to see all 250+ #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #instanature #instaorchid #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #wildflower #botany #orchid #orchid aceae #BluntLeavedOrchid #platanthera #neottia #twayblade #GrandSableDunes #cedarswamp #wetland #UP #ecology #michigan #michigan botany #michigan Nature #michigan Orchids #ExploreMichigan #puremichigan #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Moving on with this week's countdown of my personal top ten best life plants of 2017 puts us at species number 7. It takes us back to my trip out to Missouri's Taum Sauk mountain and its globally significant igneous glades. There, hundreds of large-flowered fameflower (Phemeranthus calycinus) polka dotted the exposed bedrock with their intense color. It's a succulent plant with charming little fleshy leaves (second photo) and deep pink flowers that only open in the afternoon on sunny days. Hard to believe something so pretty loves a habitat so harsh but they clearly don't mind the heat and drought conditions. I wasn't really expecting to see any and they were a very welcome botanical surprise while out there! I'd love to see the remaining fameflower species throughout the central and southern United States. #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #instaplant #instanature #wildflower #botany #fameflower #talinus #phemeranthus #succulent #igneousglade #taumsauk #barrens #missouri #missouri Botany #missouri Wildflowers #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Continuing on with my countdown of 2017's top ten life plants is one thats hardly an aesthetic species and probably one only my most ardent plant followers can get even remotely excited about haha. What number 8 may lack in conspicuous beauty it more than makes up for in rarity and peculiarity. While botanizing an incredible alkaline kettle lake's expansive floating bog in Michigan's UP, my friends and I encountered one of the state's rarest of plants in some moor rush (Juncus stygius). It's known from less than ten extant sites in Michigan, and is overall very rare in the United States. Also known as bog rush, it's a circumboreal species found throughout the northern hemisphere but scarcely makes it south of boreal Canada in North America. Michigan's UP, and northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Maine are the only other extant states for this and it's rare in all of them, too. The white flower is actually pretty damn showy for a rush but the maturing capsules are seen here. Sure, not much to look at but for a rare plant junkie and graminoid-lover like me it's gold! The second photo is a shot of this rush's stunning habitat location. #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #instaplant #instanature #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #wildflower #botany #juncus #bogrush #moorrush #floatingbog #kettlelake #rarespecies #graminoid #UP #michigan #michigan Nature #michigan botany #ExploreMichigan #puremichigan #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • As I stated yesterday, I'm doing a countdown of my top ten favorite life plants from the 2017 growing season this week. Continuing on at number 9 is the hairy lip fern (Cheilanthes lanosa). I'd desperately wanted to see this fern for some time but had never come across any during my limited southern botanical explorations. I finally made its acquaintance at Taum Sauk mountain in SE Missouri this past summer while visiting the region's rare igneous glade habitats. The Cheilanthes genus is rather unique looking and I knew I'd found one right away. Such a handsome little fern growing right out of the exposed bedrock. Recent taxonomic changes has placed many species from Cheilanthes, including this one into a new genus called Myriopteris. #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #instaplant #instanature #instafern #Fern #frond #botany #hairylipfern #cheilanthes #myriopteris #igneousglade #taumsauk #barrens #missouri #missouri Botany #missouri Wildflowers #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Every year around this time I like to reminisce on the growing season and the best life plants to come out of it. I typically write a blog post on the topic (and still am) but thought it would be fun to spend this week counting down my personal Top 10 life plants of 2017 and their stories on IG, too. I'll post a couple species each day and end with my numero uno. More or less all have been shared on here throughout the year so devotees may experience deja vu. With that being said let's kick things off with 2017's 10th best life plant... Back in July while botanizing Michigan's UP with some good buds, I finally got to see the rare Great Lakes endemic Lake Huron tansy (Tanacetum bipinnatum subsp. huronense). It's a species I'd chased for years to see in flower but been burned by vegetative-only plants at best. It can be a fickle and hard-to-time bloomer, at least for me and being so far from its range. This time around I got lucky with some plants in prime shape as the sun began to set over the northern shores of Lake Michigan. It's restricted to dunes (both active and older, stabilized ones) and cobbled, sandy beaches. Authors can't seem to find unanimous agreement on the taxonomy of this species with some elevating it to species level, others as a variety/subspecies, or all just T. bipinnatum. Regardless what you want to call it, it's rare, it's unique, and oddly beautiful. #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #instaplant #instaflower #plantid #plantporn #PlantsOfInstagram #botany #wildflower #lakehurontansy #tanacetum #asteraceae #lakemichigan #dunes #shoreline #endemic #greatlakes #upperpeninsula #UP #michigan #michigan Nature #ExploreMichigan #puremichigan #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

  • Over the weekend I decided to de-pot my senesced voodoo lily (Amorphophallus konjac) and see how successful a first season in my possession it had. I was shocked! The new corm was more than twice the size of the original and grew so much more than I anticipated! The corm will overwinter in our hallway closet where it will stay cool, dry and dark until it's time to replant come late spring. My Amorphophallus albus in the background is still green and doing its thing but its corm will soon join its bigger kin in the closet to over-winter. The second photo is a shot of both aroids from a few months ago. I got so attached to them and am already excited to have them back in my life next year! #nature #nature gram #nature lovers #nature Photography #ignature #PlantsOfInstagram #plantporn #instaplant #instanature #wildflower #botany #garden #potculture #voodoolily #amorphophallus #aroid Araceae #arumfamily #Corm #konjac #ecology #Ohio #ohionature #ohiogarden #algibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist
