  • King Diamond’s debut album, Fatal Portrait, was released on February 17, 1986. I first heard Mercyful Fate covered by Metallica on Garage Inc. and was blown away. So naturally I had to hear the real thing and then found my way to King Diamond’s solo albums. I finally saw the King in 2014 and he opened with The Candle. He sounded incredible and his live show is amazing! #kingdiamond #andylarocque #michaeldenner #timihansen #mikkeydee #metal #heavymetal #instametal #OTD #onthisday #thisdayinmusic #thisdayinmetal

  • BlackSabbath’s debut self-titled album was released on February 13, 1970 (Friday the 13th). This is the birth of Heavy Metal. I really got into Sabbath when the original lineup reunited and released Reunion in 1998, and then saw them at Ozzfest 99 and 05. They played Black Sabbath and N.I.B. both times and The Wizard the second time. I consider myself blessed! #blacksabbath #ozzyosbourne #tonyiommi #geezerbutler #billward #metal #heavymetal #instametal #OTD #onthisday #thisdayinmusic #thisdayinmetal

  • Iron Maiden’s second album, Killers, was released on February 2, 1981. Another band I had to go back and discover in the early 2000s, and my hands down favorite of the NWOBHM class. They played Wrathchild when I saw them for the third time last year. #ironmaiden #killers #pauldianno #davemurray #adriansmith #steveharris #cliveburr #metal #heavymetal #instametal #OTD #onthisday #thisdayinmusic #thisdayinmetal

Dre was previously the co-owner of, and an artist on, Death Row Records. He has produced albums for and overseen the careers of many rappers, including 2Pac, The D.O.C., Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Xzibit, Knoc-turn'al, 50 Cent, The Game, and Kendrick Lamar. He is credited as a key figure in the popularization of West Coast G-funk, a style of rap music. Dre began his career as a member of the World Class Wreckin' Cru and later found fame with the influential gangsta rap group N.W.A with Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella, which popularized the use of explicit lyrics in rap to detail the violence of street life. His 1992 solo debut The Chronic, released under Death Row Records, led him to become one of the best-selling American performing artists of 1993 and to win a Grammy Award for the single "Let Me Ride". That same year he produced Death Row labelmate Snoop Dogg's quadruple platinum debut Doggystyle, and even molded artists into top-notch producers such as his step-brother Warren G, which led to his Multi-Platinum debut Regulate...G Funk Era in 1994, and Snoop Dogg's cousin Daz Dillinger which led to the double platinum debut album Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound in 1995. In 1996, he left Death Row Records to establish his own label, Aftermath Entertainment. He produced a compilation album titled Dr. Dre Presents the Aftermath in 1996, and released a solo album titled 2001 in 1999. During the 2000s, he focused on production for other artists, while occasionally contributing vocals to songs. Dr. Dre signed Eminem in 1998 and 50 Cent in 2002 to his record label respectively, while contributing production on their albums. He has won six Grammy Awards, including Producer of the Year. Dr. Dre has also had acting roles in movies such as Set It Off, The Wash and Training Day. Rolling Stone ranked Dre at 56 on their list of 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time.

  • Judas Priest’s fourth album, Stained Class, was released on February 10, 1978. I loved going back and listening to the classic bands when I became obsessed with metal in the early 2000s. It’s important to know your roots! Priest were inventing a new type of music with their first few albums, and the bands that got me into metal took it further and further. #judaspriest #stainedclass #robhalford #kkdowning #glenntipton #ianhill #lesbinks #metal #heavymetal #instametal #OTD #onthisday #thisdayinmusic #thisdayinmetal

I have no idea what this thing on the cover is, but I know it’s awesome. #judaspriest #DefendersOfTheFaith #robhalford #kkdowning #glenntipton #ianhill #daveholland #metal #heavymetal #speedmetal #instametal #OTD #onthisday #thisdayinmusic #thisdayinmetal

  • February 18, 1933 - Born on this day, Yoko Ono, Japanese artist, singer, poet, author and peace activist and wife of John Lennon. Ono grew up in Tokyo and studied at Gakushuin. She withdrew from her course after two years and rejoined her family in New York in 1953. She spent some time at Sarah Lawrence College, and then became involved in New York City's downtown art scene, including the Fluxus group. She first met Lennon in 1966 at her own art exhibition in London and they became a couple in 1968. Ono and Lennon famously used their honeymoon at the Hilton Amsterdam as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War with their performance, Bed-Ins for Peace, in Amsterdam and Montreal in 1969. She brought feminism to the forefront in her music, influencing artists as diverse as the B-52s and Meredith Monk. Ono achieved commercial and critical acclaim in 1980 with the chart-topping album Double Fantasy, released with Lennon three weeks before his death. Public appreciation of Ono's work has shifted over time, helped by a retrospective at a Whitney Museum branch in 1989 and the 1992 release of the six-disc box set Onobox. Retrospectives of her artwork have also been presented at the Japan Society in New York City in 2001, in Bielefeld, Germany, and the UK in 2008, and Frankfurt, and Bilbao, Spain, in 2013. She received a Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement from the Venice Biennale in 2009 and the 2012 Oskar Kokoschka Prize, Austria's highest award for applied contemporary art. As Lennon's widow, Ono works to preserve his legacy. She funded Strawberry Fields in New York City, the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland, and the John Lennon Museum in Saitama, Japan (which closed in 2010). She has made significant philanthropic contributions to the arts, peace, Philippine and Japan disaster relief, and other causes. Ono continues her social activism, inaugurating a biennial $50,000 LennonOno Grant for Peace in 2002 and co-founding the group Artists Against Fracking in 2012. She has a daughter, Kyoko Chan Cox, from her marriage to Anthony Cox and a son, Sean Taro Ono Lennon, with whom she collaborates musically, from her marriage to Lennon.

  • The Lost Highway soundtrack was released on February 18, 1997. This was produced by Trent Reznor for the David Lynch film that premiered later that month. The album is brilliantly put together and the band tracks work perfectly with the scored music by Angelo Badalamenti and Barry Adamson. Angelo Badalamenti has also done amazing scores for Twin Peaks and other Lynch films. This has one of my favorite Nine Inch Nails songs, The Perfect Drug, AND one of my favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs, Eye. This is also the first time I heard Rammstein, who became popular in the U.S. not long after this. And as if that’s not enough, it has tracks from David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Marilyn Manson. I didn’t see the movie until several years later, and I loved seeing how the music fit in with Lynch’s surreal visions. #losthighway #davidlynch #trentreznor #AngeloBadalamenti #barryadamson #davidbowie #PeterChristopherson #loureed #nineinchnails #NIN #TheSmashingPumpkins #SmashingPumpkins #marilynmanson #rammstein #AntonioCarlosJobim #AntônioCarlosJobim #soundtrack #industrial #industrial rock #industrial Metal #metal #heavymetal #instametal #OTD #onthisday #thisdayinmusic #thisdayinmetal

  • 1966, Beach Boy Brian Wilson recorded the future classic song "Good Vibrations", which went on to become the band's third US number-one hit. As a child, his mother told him that dogs could pick up "vibrations" from people, so that the dog would bark at "bad vibrations" Wilson turned this into the general idea for the song. #rock #beachboys #thebeachboys #popmusic #onthisday #otd #thisdayinmusic
